New Riassophore-monk Tonsured on Nativity of the Theotokos

On Sunday evening, September 7/20, after the Vigil for the Feast of the Nativity of the Theotokos, Novice Andrew was made a riassaphore-monk with the new name of Herman, in honor of Saint Herman of Alaska.

Abbot Gabriel prayed over Br. Andrew and then tonsured him in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit before blessing him to wear the riassa, monastic belt, and klobuk.

In the customary exhortation afterwards, Abbot Gabriel pointed to the Mother of God as our example in everything. Just as her life was an incredible gift given to her parents Joachim and Anna, so we, both monastics and all Christians alike, have been given life in Christ as the greatest possible gift in our own lives. However, like Joachim and Anna, who wholeheartedly offered their daughter as a gift back to God, we are now invited to hold nothing back and give our whole selves to God in turn. If we live in this way, our entire life will be a crucifixion, but will nevertheless be a life of peace and joy such as this world cannot possibly imagine. While the envy of the demons will not cease, the grace of God and protection of the Mother of God will turn it all to the means of sanctification, salvation, and eternal joy in Christ.
