We live in biblical times. Pestilence, earthquakes, wars and rumors of wars; distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth (Lk. 21:25-6); iniquity abounds and the love of many grows cold. And yet in spite of it all, Christ tells us: Be of good cheer; I have overcome the world (Jn. 16:33).

On the threshold of Great Lent, this salvific time of augmented prayer and self-correction, and in connection with events unfolding in the Ukrainian land, I turn to all with a heartfelt plea: refraining from excesses in watching television, following newspapers and the internet...
The world can only see death as the ultimate calamity. When the prospect of eternal life is shielded from our view, when our gaze is directed only towards this fleeting life, then the fear of death is inescapable.

It is to just such a life that Great Lent summons us. It is to just such a life that the current pandemic summons us – a holy life. A life offered freely, and a heart given entirely, unto Christ our God.
