On Saturday the 8th and Sunday the 9th of August, the brethren of Holy Cross Monastery in Wayne, WV, along with His Grace Bishop Nicholas of Manhattan and a multitude of pilgrims, celebrated the feast day of their monastery’s heavenly patron, the Holy Great Martyr and Healer Panteleimon.
Schemamonk John, who had been afflicted with cancer and who had returned the Hermitage several weeks earlier, peacefully went to the Lord at 11:50pm on Sunday night of the Feast of St. Panteleimon.
Our dear brother Schemamonk John peacefully departed this life at 11:50pm on Sunday, August 9, the feast of the Holy Great-martyr and Healer Panteleimon, the patron of our monastery. The Canon for the Departure of the Soul was being read when he reposed. The whole community gathered immediately at his bedside, and the first pannykhida was then served by Archimandrite Seraphim, Archdeacon Sergius and the monastic clergy.

On Tuesday, July 28, Schemamonk John (Dezorzi) returned to the Hermitage of the Holy Cross. Fr. John was a part of the Hermitage brotherhood from 1998 until 2006, when he left and afterward lived in several other monasteries. However, several weeks ago he called the Hermitage because he had been diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer, and wished to spend his last days here at Holy Cross.

On Friday the 31st of July and Saturday the 1st of August, the brotherhood of the Hermitage of the Holy Cross joyously celebrated the feast day of St. Seraphim of Sarov with an Akathist and Divine Liturgy. This feast is dear to the hearts to the Hermitage brethren not simply as it is the Name Day of their abbot, Archimandrite Seraphim, but because St. Seraphim stands as a luminary of the Russian Church and a guide for monastics in these last days.

On the evening of Monday, July 13th, the brethren of the Hermitage of the Holy Cross celebrated the Vigil service in honor of the newly-glorified St. Paisios the Athonite – perhaps the first time anywhere in the world that the service was sung in English. The next morning, on Tuesday the 14th, the Divine Liturgy was served in honor of this great saint of the latter times.
